The Year of Magical Thinking, by Joan Didion

I thought this book sucked! Did anybody else read it? I loved The White Album, and there was stuff in Slouching Towards Bethlehem that blew my head open. HATED Where I Was From.

Is this a safe space to discuss the wild unevenness of Joan Didion? Most of TYOMT seems to be about which hotels Joan Didion stayed at.

  1. I read Play It As It Lays and found it to be pretty blah and unmemorable. Though, as I actually do try to remember it, I remember liking how she didn't pull any punches in representing the main character's obsession with her weight. It didn't make me care about the story, though.

  2. I like the title essay in Slouching Towards Bethlehem, but that's about it. I found the White Album boring. I couldn't even figure out what I was supposed to like about it.
